Taiwan: Day 1 – Eating & Drinking Around Taipei (Part 2)
So, where were we? We just finished up with Liberty Square and were starving from all of the walking. It was finally time for lunch. Little did I know that after this, the rest of the day was going to be filled with food (and drinks).

We decided to try the “best” xiao long bao place in Taiwan – and truthfully, the queue was long when we got there! We had to wait around 30 minutes to be seated. The wait was worth it, although I cannot say that it’s the best XLB I’ve tried. The taste is similar to Din Tai Fung, but I believe the selling point of Hangzou is that it’s not as expensive. I had 2 containers all to myself!

CoCo Stopover
What is a trip to Taiwan without trying out their world famous milk tea? On the way to the train station, we stumbled upon a CoCo branch that – get this – does not have any queue (because the lines are crazy here in the Philippines for this specific brand). We had to get our milk tea fix for today.

When we got to the train station, we had to quickly finish up our milk tea because drinks are not allowed inside (take note for your travels!). And then, we were on our way to the other world famous landmark of Taipei, Taiwan – the Taipei 101!

Tall buildings are mesmerizing. Seeing the Taipei 101 up close made me dizzy, but in a good way. I took my time staring at it, appreciating the work that went into building this once-tallest-structure in the world.

Because we were skimping on funds, we did not go up the building anymore. We spent a few minutes outside, resting, people-watching, talking and laughing – until it was time to go back to the hotel!

On the way back to the hotel, the sun was already about to set – and it was a splendid sun! While in the bus, we saw people rushing to the middle of the street with complete camera gears taking photos of what could have been a great view. We couldn’t see it properly for ourselves because we were in the bus – but when we got down and walked from the bus stop to the hotel, we witnessed a bit of it.

We passed by a small street-side cafe that looked so cozy and lovely – I made sure to come back and try it on our last day. But that’s for later!

When we got back, we washed up and prepared for dinner. While waiting, others were taking a nap – but I went to the lobby and tried the coffee from the cafe. It was one of the best coffee I had in Taiwan!

For dinner, we headed out to Taipei’s busiest night market! When we got there, I was overwhelmed by the number of people. You could barely walk in there without bumping into people. That said, there was a lot of variety in terms of street food, so I don’t have any regret coming here!

We did our research and tried out the top recommended food on the internet. The first of which is the Pork Pepper Bun – the first stall when you enter the night market from this gate above. It had the longest queue, but I’d agree with the reviews – I’m actually craving for this right now!

You have to keep moving while eating because there’s not enough space to hang around. When you see a stall serving food you are interested in, you stop and buy!
This grilled squid also came recommended but I found it underwhelming. It was expensive, too! I had better grilled squid in Japan.

Perhaps my favorite out of everything we’ve tried is this puffy, crumbly bread that caught us just by its smell. It was freshly baked and tasted like heaven. You can have it with ice cream inside (like a sandwich) – but I had mine just with a slice of butter. Also drooling for this right now.

Another favorite is the torched angus beef cubes that simply melt in your mouth! The serving is huge so it’s a bang for your buck. One order is good enough for dinner. Totally worth it and a must-try! I don’t have a photo of the final product because it was gone before we knew it.

We also ordered some dorayaki for dessert. It comes in different flavors but my favorite is custard.

After stuffing ourselves full, we decided to call it a night and head back to the hotel. I had a lot of fun on the first day – we did so many things that it felt like I’ve been in Taipei for several days already!

Taiwan: Day 1 – Walking around Taipei (Part 1)
Last May 2, 2019, I visited a place I have never been to for the first time. Taiwan is a controversial “country” because of its complicated history with China (which I won’t dwell on, but read up on it if you’re interested). Together with friends from work and my brother (who was traveling outside the country for the first time), we packed our bags, left any thought of work behind, and went on an adventure in Taiwan!

The weather forecast for the weekend was rainy, and true enough, it was raining when we landed. We hired 2 cars to bring us to our hotel since we landed past midnight and there were no trains running at this time. If you’re a big group, it’s worth hiring a private car instead of taking the bus with your luggage.

We got to our hotel – which I have to say – exceeded my expectations! We booked it for a big discount over at Agoda so my expectations were basic. Turned out, we booked a unique boutique hotel with great interiors – I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.

So, the hotel’s name is Hotel PaPa Whale – so basically the image that comes to mind is a whaling ship or a submarine – and immediately, you get that feeling when you step in. The rooms are also designed the same, like you’re in a bunk bed on a ship which is so cool. They have free wi-fi, and offer unlimited breakfast buffet of shabu-shabu! I swear, we booked it for cheap, and got more than what we paid for!
We still had a bit of energy after checking in so we went out to the nearby convenience store to get some snacks, drinks and essentials for the trip.

A few hours later (remember we arrived early in the morning past midnight), with only a couple of hours of sleep, we woke up tired but excited for the day ahead. Little did we know that we had to walk A LOT today. Good thing we started out with the unlimited shabu-shabu breakfast which to be honest, I immediately had enough of for the entire stay because I ate a lot.

Our hotel is located at the edge of the Ximending area (which is sort of known as the main tourist/shopping hub in Taipei much like Tokyo’s Shibuya or Seoul’s Myeongdong areas). Our first stop was a popular landmark called the North Gate.

STORY TIME: There are 5 historic gates built in Taipei during the Qing Dynasty in 1884 to enclose the then new prefectural capital. Of these 5 gates, only the North Gate is left in its “original” state while the others were destroyed during Japanese occupation (West Gate) and/or were rebuilt with a different design/look (East, South, Auxiliary South Gates). And then we’re off to our next stop – the National Taiwan Museum and the nearby 2/28 Peace Park. But before that – a distraction!

After passing through Taipei Station (on the left of the photo above), we passed through buildings which felt exactly like Tokyo! There were signs and Japanese stores all over – true enough, Taiwan has been under Japan’s control for a while so you can really feel the vibes of old Japan in Taipei.

So, we didn’t actually enter the museum because we were on a tight schedule. We just went there to take some photos (haha). We then proceeded to the park beside the museum, known as the 2/28 Peace Park.
STORY TIME: The 2/28 Peace Park was named after the February 28 Incident or the February 28 massacre, where anti-government protesters were killed starting February 28 of 1947. The number of Taiwanese deaths was estimated to be in between 5,000 and 28,000, making it one of the most important event in Taiwan’s history and a key to its independence. (source)
To be honest, I didn’t know what the park stood for until just now when I read about it to provide a bit of trivia on the blog. I’m feeling a bit silly about taking happy photos here when I should have taken the moment to think about the weight of the history behind it.

After a quick toilet break, we were on foot again towards our next destination (note – this all happened BEFORE LUNCH) – Taipei’s most famous landmark – the Chang Kai-shek Memorial.

We also saw the Presidential Office Building from afar. We didn’t know if we could go near it and take a photo with it (you couldn’t do that in the Philippines), so we just decided to continue our way.

At around this time, we were already thirsty and our legs were aching. We stopped for a quick water break at the side of the street near the Chang Kai-shek Memorial.

Liberty Square Park
The Liberty Square Park is probably one of the two most famous landmarks in Taipei (the second one, you’ll meet later on), although most people would know it as the Chang Kai-shek Memorial which is it’s old name.
Just seeing that gigantic gate of white and blue (Liberty Square Arch) takes you out of this world. My brother said, and I agree, that it was like seeing the gates of heaven before your very eyes. I was mesmerized. I took my time appreciating this huge gate before we proceeded with the picture taking.

After perhaps 30 minutes (we took our time at the gate), we finally entered and saw the park in its entirety.
From the arch, you will see the National Concert Hall on the left, and the National Theater on the right. At the far end is the Chang Kai-shek Memorial hall, in all its glory.

This was already at noon so there’s not much people out, most probably because they’re at lunch or the sun was blazing hot. Speaking of which, it’s time for us to eat! We were already hungry after all of the walking (including climbing the stairs up to the memorial hall).

I have become a big fan of this band since I started listening to them just a month (or two) ago. On the first listen, I didn’t really like Shukumei that much – and it was probably because I didn’t really listen 100% to it, nor try to understand what its lyrics meant. Now, this is officially my favorite song!

Weathering With You – Full Trailer
Weathering with You (Japanese Title: Tenki no Ko, literally Child of the Weather), is Makoto Shinkai’s 12th film. I loved Kimi No Na Wa, and was lucky to catch in in the cinema – I watched it without any expectations, and only finding out later on that it was from the same guy who made 5 Centimeters per Second, and Garden of Words – both I also really enjoyed and watched several times!
Here goes the trailer – I like that it begins with a quick run through of Shinkai-san’s previous movies before getting into Weathering with You. The story looks promising, and as always, the visuals are better than reality.
Oh my goodness, I can’t wait for this movie to come out in the cinema! I really wish they screen this here in the Philippines (please SM Cinema!).

I’m moving out!
I said over at Twitter that there’s going to be some major changes in my life this month and so this is my first official announcement of one of those changes – I’m moving out of the apartment I’ve lived in for the past 8 years! It was quite a rash decision-making from my part but I’ve really been thinking about it for a while. Circumstances just pushed me to the edge.
No Parking
I got kicked out of my monthly parking space because the entire building is going to undergo a major renovation – in fact, they’ve kicked out all of their tenants. There’s no other available parking around the area so my car is now temporarily parked a a friend’s house, one city away. This is the main trigger of my decision to look for a new place (with a parking slot).

Not my apartment building, but the building across where we live (where I parked my car) will be undergoing renovation (I’m not even sure if they’re going to demolish the place) – so I foresee some 24/7 noise and dust that could impact my quality of life. I don’t want to have to deal with that – and the potential “carmaggedon” it could cause considering we’re right in the heart of Makati Avenue (i.e., traffic capital, probably worst than EDSA on most days).

I’m not sure why I even bother putting headers that just link to the previous paragraph. Anyhow, life’s been good here – I’m surrounded by so many restaurants, there’s a supermarket right across the street, a mall with a cinema one block away, a 10-minute walk to Makati’s hippest bars and pubs – but it’s time to move on. To a proper residential area, not hearing jeepney honks early in the morning, having a relaxing space to relax and recuperate, an area to jog or bike around – it’s a place that would be better for my (and my brother’s) physical and mental health. I will still have to go through traffic going to the office, but it’s the same as now so that’s not really a factor. Plus, we’ll finally be able to have a pet!
So, where am I moving?
It’s a secret for now. Ok, not really – but I’ll be posting about it in the future so just look out for that when it happens! I’m excited – but I’m worried about the whole packing and the actual moving out process. I need to do so many things – transfer my internet subscription, update my billing addresses, etc. And I have to do all of these as soon as possible because this is all happening in two weeks!
Change is good. We gotta keep moving forward!

Under the weather
While summer has just recently started for the rest of the world, it’s done for the Philippines. We’ve had no sun for the past two weeks. It’s been raining non-stop, with crazy thunderstorms every other day. I love the rain – I am a rain person, and I like the cooler temperature that goes along with it – but I hate getting sick when the weather abruptly changes like this.
I’ve been nursing a cold for almost two weeks now. It started as a slight pain inside the nose bridge area of my nose (I don’t know how to explain it better). My head was heavy and I couldn’t sleep well after a few days because my nose started clogging up. Now I’ve got full on colds, my nose is dripping when I’m standing up, clogged when I’m lying down. I have cough, I have a fever that doesn’t want to come out, my throat’s itchy – there’s a lot to complain about the state of my health right now.
There’s a certain kind of peace that comes after a strong rain
I want to go out in the rain. I want to drink beer while listening to the raindrops fall on the pavement. But I also don’t mind lying in bed, fully wrapped inside a blanket, as long as I can breathe properly. Fortunately, my mom is here! There’s nothing like tender loving care from your mother when you’re sick! She makes me food to keep me energized. She rubs Vicks Vaporub on my back (HAHA). If only it weren’t fiscal year end, I could say that it’s the best time to be sick!

I hope I get better tomorrow. I don’t want to be barking like a mad dog at work with this cough. I want to wear a mask the way Japanese people do when they have the sniffles – but people stare at you here for wearing a mask outside the hospital.

Stop trying and start doing
It’s the end of a fiscal year at work, and I’m also nearing the end of another year in this world. July to me is like New Year’s – I feel inspired to change, to start something new, to become better. The same goes for this blog, which I have obviously been neglecting for how long now. There’s really only one reason why I haven’t been posting anything – it’s because I’ve always been waiting for the right topic, the inspiration and motivation to come up with the right words to say – and I end up not doing anything. Analysis paralysis is what others would call it. I’ve traveled so many places the past months but I haven’t gotten around to blogging about those trips as well. So yes, I have been failing miserably at this.
It’s just turned July 1st (it’s 12:33 AM of July 1st as of the time of writing this) and I’ve decided to just write. I just watched this video of a YouTuber that I follow and it inspired me to just start over again.
This one’s about journaling (like the physical one), which I also tried to do at the start of the year and ended up failing, too – but it’s something I want to do for blogging. This is how I started 15 years ago, and it’s probably the right thing to do to keep me posting. I’m tired of thinking about what to write ahead of time, analyzing what would make my blog special, thinking about how to get people to visit and come back regularly – not that I really cared about that so much at the start, but ultimately, I wanted to do something GREAT right away. I put too much pressure on myself that I literally just stopped doing anything.
That said, I will return to daily blogging. There’s no better day to start than today, a week before I turn a year older. Maybe along the way, I’ll discover my niche. I’ll also be going through some major changes which I want to document and share with you guys! So yeah, let’s see where this goes. I plan to post daily for at least 30 days – it might be painful to force things out of some days but I also have some things to look forward to this month, so there will still be some balance between trash and hopefully, some quality posts.
