Tokyo Spring 2018 – Day 3 Part 2: Odaiba’s Unicorn Gundam & Sunset
After a 3PM lunch, I was thinking about where to go next. Shinjuku Gyoen, which was supposed to be for this morning? Roppongi to get a good view of Tokyo Tower at night? Then I realized it’s the best time to go to Odaiba because of the Gundam Unicord transformation (I thought this only happened at night), and the night view of the Tokyo Skyline with the Rainbow Bridge. Checking Google Maps, the station for the train going to Odaiba is 9 minutes away so that decided it for me.
New Pier Takeshiba
I just stumbled upon this place because Takeshiba station (where I could ride the train to Odaiba) was attached to this. There was a big mast in the middle, and I initially thought it was attached to a big ship (which I wanted to see coming from the One Piece theme park). There was no ship, however, the view from the pier was amazing!
It was very cold and windy, so I quickly ran to the station after taking a few photos! I would have wanted to stay for a few more minutes if it wasn’t that cold! There weren’t a lot of people considering this is a pier (where you could ride boats going to nearby islands)!
Diver City, Odaiba
First things first, the priority of the visit to Odaiba is to see the new Gundam Unicorn, which replaced the old RX-78-2. But before I post photos of that, I was surprised to see how things have changed for this once barren land. At least, from my last visit, there were more cherry blossom trees around Diver City, as well as flowers that were probably just planted there for spring! I saw some food/coffee trucks too, but they were already packing up – I would have loved some coffee with this view!
Unicorn Gundam RX-0
The main event! I wish they kept the old one and added this right beside him instead! That would have doubled the wow factor! I don’t really have enough words because it was more special the first time I saw RX-78-2! If it’s your first time, though, I’m sure your jaws will drop to the floor at how detailed and life-like this replica is!
One thing this Gundam has that the previous one didn’t – is it’s ability to transform, albeit underwhelmingly. This Unicorn Gundam transforms into Destroy Mode at specific times during the day (see below taken from Ikidane Nippon):
DAYTIME
Unicorn Gundam Transformation
11:00/ 13:00/ 15:00/ 17:00
EVENING
19:00 & 20:30 Light show +”Fly! Gundam 2017″
19:30 & 21:00 Light show + “Mobile Suit Gundan UC RE: MIX0096”
20:00 & 21:30 Light show+ “Mobile Suit Gundam UC Special Movie “Cage” SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]:Tielle
I only managed to catch the 17:00 (5PM) normal transformation, which is why it felt underwhelming. It ends in less than a minute! Here’s the transformed Destroy Mode version – I’m sure this looks better at night, with the light effects!
Odaiba Seaside Park
After seeing what I came here for, I decided to go somewhere I have never been yet. While on the train to Odaiba, I saw that there is actually a beach area where people can chill and watch the sunset. This was just right below Aqua City Odaiba. You just follow the walkway where the Statue of Liberty is, and go all the way to the end where it brings you to the waterfront.
The sun was setting so fast, so I was running towards the far end of the beach (to realize there’s actually stairs there – I didn’t have to walk all the way). Tokyo sunset – stunning! I want to have a picnic here next time, with some beer!
Lugias to end the day
After this, I was about to go home already when I checked Pokemon Go again. There was a Legendary Raid starting in 8 minutes at the Statue of Liberty, and another one 30 minutes later at the other end of Aqua City. I decided to stay a bit longer for these since it’s not everyday I get the chance for an easy raid!
On the way home, I decided to go inside Aqua City because it was getting chilly outside. I did a few window shopping, but didn’t get anything other than photos!
On the way out, the evening view of Tokyo greeted me – my hand was too shaky so these are a bit blurry, but this is the picture that comes into mind when someone says “Good night, Tokyo”.
I didn’t go out for dinner anymore. I just bought food from Family Mart and ate it before starting tonight’s blog! It took me 3 hours to finish two posts! But I will push through until Day 10! See you tomorrow!
From Tokyo, Good Night! 🙂
